Phoenix Natural Gas have again shown their support for Bike2Work Week.

Phoenix Natural Gas are encouraging their employees to swap four wheels for two to mark Bike2Work Week 2007. Phoenix have been firm supporters of the Department for Regional Development’s Bike2Work initiative for several years and are urging their staff to get out of the car and into the saddle.

The company believes that more employees than ever have become involved with ‘Bike2Work week’ and senior executives are really pedalling the message home.  Peter Dixon, Chief Executive, Phoenix Natural Gas, said:

“Phoenix has supported Bike2Work week for several years and in that time the initiative has grown from strength to strength with the spot light increasing on leaving the car at home, helping to decrease congestion and also reduce pollution.  Everyone can do their bit to help make our society a better place to live and into the future natural gas, alongside renewable technologies, has an important role in contributing to further reduce Northern Ireland’s carbon footprint.

We see widespread support for sustainable transport as another key facet of achieving this collective goal and would encourage other private sector companies to show their commitment to supporting local government and particularly this week’s annual bike campaign.”

Throughout the week Phoenix is providing all its employees cycling to work a well deserved free breakfast in their canteen. The Belfast gas company also provides showering facilities and a bicycle stand for its staff.

Andy Bready, Bike2Work Co-Ordinator, has been delighted with the year on year growth in the scheme’s popularity locally and said:

“ Phoenix is to be commended on their commitment to the promotion of sustainable forms of transport such as cycling to their employees. Cycling is not only an excellent form of exercise but is a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way of commuting rather than sitting in congested traffic. Phoenix has played an integral role in Bike2Work Week over the last number of years and Travelwise NI is delighted to have the continuing support of one of Northern Ireland's leading private sector employers".

The Bike2Work Day cycle ride takes place this morning [Wednesday 20th June] and Commuters from across the Greater Belfast Area will be meeting at 8.30am at the NCN Cycle Path by the Halifax Call Centre on the Gas Works Site, Ormeau Road, Belfast to cycle to Belfast City Hall who are providing free cycle parking. In addition to Phoenix Natural Gas and the Northern Ireland Civil Service, organisations such as Action Cancer, Action Renewables and Sustrans, the cycling charity have all offered their support.
