Pupils at Holy Child Primary School recently got a visit from representatives of Phoenix Natural Gas.
They were there to present the school with a certificate confirming that since it switched from its original fuel source to high efficiency natural gas systems in 2002, it has reduced its central heating carbon footprint by around 30 per cent. This change has meant that the school has cut its carbon emissions by an incredible 261 tonnes in the past six years alone.
The pupils also enjoyed meeting Phoenix mascot 'Wally The Waster', who is leading a campaign to highlight the amount of money being wasted by households still using inefficient old boilers.
The key message pupils learned from the visit was that no matter what fuel you use to heat your home or school it should always be done efficiently, leading to both financial savings and a lower carbon footprint.
Simon Little of Phoenix Natural Gas said: "Wally the Waster is a lot of fun, but he has a serious message to get across and it was great to see the children understand the need for us all to consider energy efficiency. It is so important for people to be aware that if their boiler is 15 years old or more it could be wasting up to 40% of the energy they think it is providing. That means that if a family is spending £1,000 a year on oil, £400 of that spend could be going to waste".
School Vice-Principal Michelle Deery commented: "As a school we are very mindful of our responsibilities in terms of doing all we can to promote energy efficiency and good environmental practice. It has been great to get this recognition and it has really highlighted the importance of these issues to the children".
