Downpatrick residents and business owners met recently with representatives of Phoenix Energy at the first in a series of planned Downpatrick public information events to learn more about the planned works schedule to extend the natural gas pipeline into the town and bring the benefits of natural gas to around 5,000 properties.
The event took place last Thursday 30th November at the Saint Patrick Visitor Centre and provided an opportunity for locals to meet with representatives from Phoenix Energy and view the planned works maps.
Jonathan Martindale, Director of Communications at Phoenix Energy said, “Phoenix Energy is committed to working with the local community to develop an efficient and practical programme of works that will minimise disruption to the area.
“This event aimed to inform the community about upcoming works and provide a forum for locals to voice their concerns or ask questions. We were delighted to welcome hundreds of visitors and meet the community individually to discuss the programme.
“I was also delighted to welcome a number of key community representatives at the event including South Down MLA, Emma Rogan, and Brendan Kearney from Down Business Connect. Their support in bringing natural gas to the area is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing to work with them throughout the construction programme to ensure as smooth process as possible.”

Local business representative, Brendan Kearney, said, “This is a highly anticipated project for the people of Downpatrick and, having been in continued communication with Phoenix Energy for the past number of months, I am satisfied that the project has been well considered, in line with the needs of the community.
“The construction programme will undoubtedly have an impact on local businesses, however I am committed as a business community representative to work with Phoenix Energy to ensure minimal disruption to businesses in Downpatrick.
“Whilst an element of disruption is inevitable with an infrastructure project of this size, I am confident that the plan presented represents an efficient and safe works programme that considers the historic nature of our town and the requirements of our community.”

Phoenix Energy works are scheduled to commence in early January 2018 in the town centre for a period of approximately 12 weeks. Traffic diversions will operate in the area throughout the duration and residents and business owners will be notified directly in advance.
