Knockevin School Gets on its Marks for Annual Run

Knockevin Special School in Downpatrick is getting on its marks as it prepares to host its annual 10K & 5K Run/Walk on Saturday 19th May, supported this year by Phoenix Energy.

Now in its third year, the event continues to attract increasing numbers of runners and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than before thanks to the support of Phoenix Energy. The company will be on hand with a ‘Fuelling Station’, providing water and energy snacks to help fuel the runners on the day.

The chip-timed race starts at 12 noon from Knockevin Special School on Racecourse Hill and will incorporate a 10K route for serious runners, and a shorter 5k run and walk suitable for families and children.

Speaking about the new partnership, Knockevin Special School PTA Chairperson, Paula Dillon, said, “Downpatrick is known for its great running routes and three years ago we established this run to not only provide the local community with a great day’s racing, but to raise awareness of Knockevin Special School and the services that we offer and of course to help raise much-needed funds for the school.

“Knockevin is unique in that it is the only school in the area to cater for pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties from the age of 3 to 19. Our pupils attend from right across Co Down including Ballynahinch, Castlewellan, Crossgar, Dromore and even as far as Newcastle. Having such a popular event based out of the school grounds provides us with a fantastic opportunity to promote the school and raise the profile of the work we are doing to help local children with learning difficulties.

“We are delighted to welcome Phoenix Energy as the 10K race sponsor and it’s great to have them on board to add some fun on the day with the Phoenix Fuelling Station. Thanks to support from Phoenix, this year promises to be the biggest race yet and I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic day out.”

Phoenix Energy Communications Manager, Geri Wright, said, “As a company actively engaged in the communities it serves, we are delighted to support Knockevin Special School in their efforts to raise vital school funds. The staff at Knockevin work hard to provide the best education for local children and it’s inspiring to see all of the good work being done within the school, which often goes under the radar.

“This event promises to be a fantastic day celebrating the success of the school and raising awareness of their work in local communities. We’re delighted to support this event and the Phoenix team will be there on the day with giveaways and much needed energy boosts to help fuel the runners and walkers to the finish line.”
